Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 169 Saturday October 5. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Americal Division soldiers reported light scattered contact in the southern I Corps Tactical Zone yesterday. Division forces accounted for five VC and four NVA killed and one individual and one crew-served weapon captured. 11th Inf. Bde. "Jungle Warriors" killed five VC and detained one VC suspect during operations in Quang Ngai Province yesterday. "Always First" soldiers of a 3d Bn., 1st Inf. company led by 1LT Fredric W. Long (Denver, CO) killed four VC near Duc Pho yesterday. The first was killed while attempting to flee from a village, six miles northwest of Duc Pho. The other three were killed near Highway 515, six miles west of Duc Pho. Soldiers of another 3d Bn., 1st Inf. company killed one VC near a village, eight miles north of Duc Pho. One VC suspect was detained by "Sykes Regulars" of a 1st Bn., 20th Inf. company 11 miles northwest of Quang Ngai City. The suspect, caught near a trail, had no ID card. He had pack marks on his shoulders. Action was scattered as 198th Inf. Bde. "Brave and Bold" soldiers accounted for four NVA killed and one crew-served weapon captured yesterday. In the first action of the day, "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn. spotted two NVA in the Burlington Trail area. The gunships opened fire on the NVA who were hiding in the dense jungle west of Tam Ky. Both were killed. Late yesterday afternoon a 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company led by CPT Floyd M. McLean, Jr. (Ft. Sill, OK) engaged and killed one NVA while searching an area west of Tam Ky. The "Ready Rifles" captured one RPD light machine gun that the NVA had been carrying. An Americal Division recon. team killed one NVA northwest of Chu Lai early yesterday evening. The "Professionals" of the 5th Bn., 46th Inf. treated 229 Vietnamese during three MEDCAPs yesterday. "Charger" units of the 196th Inf. Bde. reported one K-44 rifle captured by a 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company yesterday. The rifle was found seven miles southwest of Hoi An. "Dragoons" of the 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported negative contacts in their area of operations yesterday. Americal Division forces suffered four soldiers wounded and evacuated for medical treatment yesterday.
