Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 5 Oct 1968 issue.
In a week of moderate action soldiers of the Americal Div reported killing 165 enemy soldiers in the southern portion of the I Corps. Action flared in Quang Ngai Province as soldiers from the 11th LIB accounted for 42 enemy killed. The 1/20th Inf killed a total of 25 NVA soldiers, captured six weapons and detained one suspect in two actions SW of the Ha Thanh SF Camp, 16 miles west of Quang Ngai City. Attacking an NVA force in fortified bunkers and tunnels at the base of a hill less than one mile from the camp, the unit killed 10. Another company from the battalion, operating in the same area encountered an unknown number of enemy and killed 15. Elements of the 196th LIB accounted for 17 enemy dead in Operation Wheeler/Wallowa. In numerous small contacts centering on an area seven miles south of Hoi An, the reconnaissance platoon from the 4/21st Inf killed 13 Viet Cong. A company of the 1/20th Inf, 11th LIB working in Operation Champaign Grove engaged and killed three NVA soldiers. Later, the unit found a cache containing three weapons and 2,100 rounds of small arms ammunition.
