Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 12 Oct 1968 issue. Helicopter crews from the 1st Avn Bde reported killing 246 enemy soldiers in heavy fighting during the week. Gunship crews from the 7/1st Air Cav, 164th CAG reported killing 58 during the first day. Surprising an enemy sampan flotilla 22 miles west of Moc Hoa, chopper gunners from Troop C reported killing 56 VC as they sank 36 of the craft. The next day crews of the 164th reported killing a total of 57 VC in operations throughout the central portion of the Mekong Delta. In a series of encounters with enemy sampan fleets north of Soc Trang the same day, chopper gunners from the 235th AWC, 307th CAB reported killing 20 VC and wounding 20 others. While engaging a ground target 10 miles SE of Soc Trang, other helicopter crewmen reported causing a secondary explosion with flames more than 100-feet high. While operating in an area centered 20 miles north of Sa Dec, gunship crews from C/7/1st Air Cav. reported killing nine VC as they sank five sampans and destroyed three enemy structures. Troop A, flying support for an airmobile operation of the 9th ARVN Div 12 miles east of Can Tho, reported killing eight VC and destroying four enemy fortifications. Later in the week gunship crews from the 164th reported killing 59 VC and sinking 44 sampans. In the biggest action of the day, gunship crews from the 235th AWC reported killing 43 VC and sinking 42 sampans.
