Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 12 Oct 1968 issue.
In a series of light actions 9th Inf Div soldiers reported killing 81 enemy. Slogging through waist deep mud and brackish water, elements of the 2nd Bde killed 18 VC during the third day of their operations in the Thanh Phu special zone, 40 miles SE of Dong Tam. While sweeping through the rice paddies 20 miles west of Dong Tam, B/6/31st Inf ran into heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire from an estimated VC company. The battle raged throughout the day with the VC unit broken into small squads covering the area. Additional 9th Inf companies were inserted into the area and contact continued into the night with six companies and one platoon surrounding the enemy force. First reports showed 15 VC killed. Ground troops from the 1st Brigade and supporting gunship crews from A/3/17th Air Cav, encountered an enemy force seven miles south of Can Giuoc. In the action the air cavalrymen reported killing seven VC, while the riflemen accounted for three enemy deaths.
