Description: The following is an edited version from the Americal Daily News Sheets Vol. 2. No. 179 Tuesday October 15. CHU LAI (AMERICAL IO) - Units of the Americal Division accounted for 18 VC and one NVA killed, 16 VC suspects detained and four individual weapons captured in the southern I Corps area yesterday. In the 196th Inf. Bde. area of operations yesterday "Charger" units accounted for nine VC killed. A 4th Bn., 21st Inf. company killed one VC with small arms fire seven miles northwest of Hoi An. The 4th Bn., 21st Inf. recon. plt. killed a total of five VC in two separate contacts nine miles northwest of Hoi An yesterday. A 3d Bn., 21st Inf. company received approximately 150 rounds of sniper fire 16 miles northwest of Tam Ky yesterday. The "Gimlets" returned the fire and called in artillery, resulting in two VC killed. Later in the same area the company killed another VC. Action continued light and scattered in the 11th Inf. Bde. area of operations yesterday. "Jungle Warriors" reported eight VC killed, eight VC suspects detained, and one individual weapon captured. Late morning action by elements of the 3d Bn., 1st Inf. in continued wet weather resulted in three VC killed. The action took place in an area around the "Always First" forward fire support base, LZ Liz, four miles northwest of Duc Pho. A 3d Bn., 1st Inf. company commanded by CPT James O'Herron (Winona, MN) killed the first two VC in two separate contacts in the area centered five miles west of Duc Pho. One of the VC killed was dressed in a green uniform with a camouflaged scarf. Documents were also found on the VC's body. Later in the afternoon another company of the battalion commanded by 1LT Larry Birchfield (Albuquerque, NM) engaged and killed the third VC near the same site. Early in the afternoon the 11th Bde. command and control helicopter engaged two VC three miles east of Duc Pho, resulting in one VC killed and one suspect detained. Action in the 4th Bn., 3d Inf. area resulted in four VC suspects detained yesterday. The first subject was detained six miles southeast of Duc Pho by a 4th Bn., 3d Inf. company led by CPT Grady Middleton (Quincy, FL). Later another company of the battalion commanded by CPT Jimmie R. Davis (Denton, TX) detained the other three VC suspects four miles north of Duc Pho. In action around Quang Ngai City, a 1st Bn., 20th Inf. company commanded by CPT Alfred N. Webb (LaJolla, CA) killed four VC, detained three suspects, recovered one M-1 carbine, web gear, medical supplies, and documents seven miles northwest of Quang Ngai City. Units of the 198th Inf. Bde. killed one NVA, detained four VC suspects, and captured three individual weapons. A 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company engaged a small group of NVA in the Burlington Trail area yesterday. The "Ready Rifles" point man opened fire killing one NVA. Two others dropped their weapons and fled. One M-16 and two AK-47 rifles were captured as a result of that action. Another 1st Bn., 52d Inf. company led by CPT Floyd W. McLean, Jr. (Ft. Sill, OK) destroyed one booby trap which the enemy had hidden in tall grass near rice paddies. The "Ready Rifles" recon. plt. led by 1LT James A. Lockhart (Montpelier, OH) detained three VC suspects west of Tam Ky yesterday afternoon. None of the military-age males were carrying ID cards. In the Chu Lai area a 5th Bn., 46th Inf. company destroyed one booby trap while on a sweeping mission south of Chu Lai. "Aero Scouts" of the 123d Avn. Bn. detained one VC suspect yesterday afternoon in the Chu Lai area. Yesterday afternoon a 5th Bn., 46th Inf. company led by CPT Herbert A. Walter (Columbus, GA) found and destroyed a 45-foot-long tunnel. Later the company uncovered a mine cache. The VC had stored seven mines and a bag of mine fuses in a tunnel south of Chu Lai. The "Professionals" destroyed the cache. The 1st Sqdn., 1st Armored Cav. reported one VC killed and four suspects detained yesterday. "Blue Ghosts" of "F" Trp., 8th Cav. accounted for the one VC killed in the Burlington Trail area. Also in the Burlington Trail area, "C" Trp., 1st Cav. detained four VC suspects. The Americal Division suffered no casualties yesterday.
