B/7/17 CAV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
South Vietnam
Description: B/7/17 Cav worked out of Long Song, north of Phan Thiet with 2 175mm guns on stand-by. The Troop moved into the area to possibly curtail movement of the VC out of the area. The Blues were inserted at 1300 in a small clearing at the mouth of a canyon to conduct a sweeping operation through the narrow valley. At 1800 they found several caves. After a close examination of the caves, the Blues captured 100 entrenching tools, 8 large knives, 20 small knives, 5 10" claymore type mines, 60 small hand grenades, and 75 101 pound demolitions charges. At this point, one 101st ABN platoon was inserted to reinforce the Blue. An NPD was set up.
