1/1 MARINES was a US Marine Corps unit
Primary service involved, US Marine Corps
Operation MEADE RIVER
Quang Nam Province, I Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Dodge City area
Description: The 3/26th Marines reached Phase Line Charlie without incident but Company E encountered strong NVA forces in a bunker complex they called the "Northern Bunker Complex," about 1,000 meters to the north and just below the La Tho river. By first light the next morning they had crossed the river and linked up with the 1/1st Marines. On the 7th, the 3/26th Marines launched its assault into the Northern Bunker Complex with a total of five companies. Company H made contact in a cemetery where NVA troops fought from two pagodas. Much of the ground was under water, forming a quagmire through which the Marines were unable to maneuver. The NVA had a fortified hamlet on their left flank. Soon, the Marines had 10 KIA and 23 WIA. After dark, with great effort, the Marines were able to recover their casualties.
