Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 27 Jan 1969 issue. Soldiers of the Americal Div killed 159 enemy in a week of heavy contact. Troopers of the 196th LIB accounted for 21 of the enemy killed and six tons of rice uncovered Jan 11. An element of the 4/31st Inf killed six VC in three contacts during the late morning hours in an area 20 miles west of Tam Ky. Three companies of the 3/21st Inf, working in an area 14 miles west of the city killed 14 enemy in nine scattered actions during the morning and afternoon hours, while battalion soldiers unearthed 4,500 pounds of rice in a single enemy cache 14 miles west of Tam Ky. Four more tons of rice were discovered in several caches in scattered areas by other brigade elements. On Jan 10 a recon patrol from the 11th LIB called in artillery from the 6/11th Arty. on an enemy platoon 12 miles south of Quang Ngai City along the Song Be. Six enemy were killed in the action. Other brigade units killed seven VC in five incidents in Quang Ngai City and Duc Pho areas.
