Description: The following is an edited version from the weekly Vietnam Communique column in the 27 Jan 1969 issue.
Elements of the 173rd Abn Bde killed seven VC during scattered actions on Jan 11. Three of the enemy were killed in a single encounter 40 miles northwest of An Khe. A paratrooper with an ambush patrol from the 4/503d Abn was sitting concealed in thick brush and providing security for the patrol when he heard movement to his front. Moments later he observed an AK47 rifle poking through the grass. The paratrooper detonated a Claymore mine and sprayed the area with M16 fire. A search revealed three bodies and three individual weapons. Another VC was killed nearby by the same battalion element.
Two more enemy were killed by paratroopers of the 1/503d Abn 30 miles east of An Khe during reconnaissance-in-force operations, while one enemy was killed elsewhere by supporting elements.
