Description: The 361st Escort Company's unit history states that during this period they made major contributions to the successful defense of the Ben Het and Dak To area in support of the 24th STZ. Numerous casualties were inflicted on friendly forces and they were fortunate to only loose two aviators, WO1 Clotfelter and WO1 Mahowald, during this period. They committed four aircraft a day to the 24th STZ. The day missions were difficult because one could almost set his watch by the rocket and mortar attacks on Dak To at 1630 hours each afternoon which was in addition to the sporadic fire that came in throughout the day. Finally, a rule was made that no aircraft would be on Dak To's airstrip at 1630H each day. The Panthers responded immediately to these mortar attacks and became quite accustomed to suppressing or destroying enemy positions on Rocket Ridge to the south of Dak To.
Comments: WO1 CLOTFELTER MARK DENNIS; AC; KIA; WO1 MAHOWALD MICHAEL ALLEN; co-pilot; KIA;
