Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "78 Reds Killed Near Dak Seang." Saigon (S&S Vietnam Bureau) - Fighting flared anew Sunday near Dak Seang, 90 miles southwest of Da Nang, and in an early morning battle an element of the Vietnamese 42nd Inf. Regt. killed 78 enemy soldiers, according to Vietnamese military spokesmen here. Fighting less than a mile north of the Special Forces camp, which has been under shelling by the enemy for more than two weeks, the ARVNs were supported by artillery and tactical air, the spokesman said. Informed military sources put friendly casualties in the action at one killed, 15 wounded. In the same area Saturday, it was officially reported here, mobile air strike forces and ARVN elements killed 32 enemy soldiers in three contacts throughout the day. In Quang Ngai Province in southern I Corps Saturday evening, enemy gunners shot down a U.S. Air Force Phantom jet, U.S. spokesmen reported. Two Americans died in the crash. Two Huey helicopters were shot down by the enemy Saturday, the spokesman said. The first went down in Kontum Province in northwestern II Corps and four Americans were wounded, the spokesmen said. The second was downed in Binh Thuan Province in southeastern II Corps, the spokesman said, but no one was hurt. In other fighting Saturday, a spokesman reported 31 enemy killed by American units. Twenty-one died under aerial machine-gun fire after a 1st Air Cav. Div. helicopter took small arms fire from enemy soldiers on the ground about 55 miles north-northwest of Saigon, he said. Six enemy were killed 80 miles north of Saigon in a firefight with elements of 1st Air Cav.'s 2nd Brigade. One American was killed, none wounded, the spokesman said. Helicopter gunship and artillery support was used, a spokesman said.
