Description: The following is an edited version of an article titled "Reds Down Copter In Dak Poko Valley." Saigon - Communist troops in the embattled Dak Poko Valley, 90 miles southwest of Da Nang, downed an American UH1 helicopter Friday afternoon, the 12th U.S. aircraft downed in the valley since an enemy offensive began there April 1, according to the U.S. Command. One American was killed and one wounded in the crash two miles north of the Dak Seang Special Forces camp where the Reds launched their most massive attack of the year April 1, the Command said. Three of the 12 aircraft downed in the valley were C7 "Caribou" planes flying resupply airdrops to the camp. Earlier, Red gunners lobbed 122mm rockets into a temporary fire base - Fire Base Lima 00 three miles east of Dak Seang, causing light casualties among the Vietnamese rangers manning the base, a Vietnamese army spokesman said. Elsewhere, Leathernecks from the 7th Regt., 1st marine Div., killed six enemy soldiers with the help of helicopter gunships, artillery and tactical air strikes 25 miles south of Da Nang Friday, a U.S. military spokesman reported. The fight began when Red troops attacked the Leathernecks as they were setting up a night defensive position, the spokesman said. Enemy soldiers rained small arms and rocket grenade fire on the Marines along with 60mm mortar rounds, wounding seven Marines with no fatalities, he said. In other action reported by the U.S. Command: - Troops from the 3rd Brigade, 9th Inf. Div., killed five Red soldiers 20 miles southwest of Saigon. - U.S. Air Force B52 bombers flew nine missions over Tay Ninh Province in the Mekong Delta west of Saigon. - Helicopter gunships from the Americal Div., reconnoitering an area 82 southeast of Da Nang, killed nine enemy soldiers. - Marines from another unit of the 7th Regt. ambushed seven enemy soldiers near Quang Nah Province's capital, Hoi An, 16 miles south of Da Nang. Five Red soldiers were killed while U.S. casualties were three wounded. - Red gunners along the Demilitarized Zone fired about 10 rounds of 60mm mortar fire into a night defensive position of a unit of the 1st brigade, 5th Inf. Div. (Mech.), 97 miles northwest of Da Nang, causing only light materiel damage.
