Description: The 119th unit history states that today the Gators, along with the 189th Ghostriders and four Chinooks supported the 47th ARVN Regt. As they extracted 2,000 ARVNs from LZ Yellow and inserted them 7KMs north into an LZ. The LZ was prepared by 7/17th Cav gunships and covered by the same. The LZ was cold and the Ghostriders were the first in. The Gators followed right behind the Ghostriders when Higher Highers made their mistake. ARVN 105 rounds started coming in and one round landed just behind Gator 834. WO Peyton started coming in and stated he lost cyclic control, pedals, and hydraulics as the ship somersaulted and the troops on board were thrown out. WO Peyton, WO Crawford, SP4 Conwall and SP4 Spehar all received minor injuries. The aircraft was a total loss and was shortly there after blown up. The ARVN field commander for the artillery unit that shot down Gator 834 awarded WO Peyton with the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. No further action has been taken on this incident.
