Description: 01Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 08-14 Page 2 173rd Abn Bde Shortly before noon on Feb. 9 in Kontum Province, helicopter gunships of the 173rd Airborne Brigade engaged an undetermined-size enemy force in a bunker complex 11 miles northeast of Kontum City in Military Region 2. Seven enemy were killed and 26 bunkers were destroyed. There were no friendly casualties. During the afternoon of Feb. 13 in Binh Dinh Province of Military Region 2, an element of the 173rd, while operating in an area seven miles south-southwest of Bong Son, was engaged by an undetermined-size enemy force. Small arms and automatic weapons fire was exchanged. Enemy losses are unknown. One U.S. soldier was killed and two were wounded in brief action. The same afternoon in Pleiku Province, also in Military Region 2, an element of the 173rd engaged an estimated 15 enemy soldiers in an area 22 miles southeast of Pleiku City. Small arms and automatic weapons fire was exchanged and U.S. Air Force tactical air strikes were called in to support the action. Five enemy were killed by the air strikes and there were no friendly casualties.
