Description: 08Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 15-21 Page 2 173rd, USAF join; day's total 56 On the morning of Feb. 17 in Kontum Province of Military Region 2, helicopters of the 173rd Airborne Brigade on a visual reconnaissance mission spotted an unknown-size enemy force in a bunker complex 39 miles southwest of Kontum City. Gunships and U.S. Air Force Tactical air strikes were called in and killed 33 of the enemy and destroyed several bunkers. There were no friendly casualties. About an hour later, the gunships observed an estimated 15 enemy in the same general vicinity and engaged them with onboard ordnance. Six more of the enemy were killed without friendly casualties. Later in the same afternoon, helicopters of the 173rd again spotted another unknown-size enemy force 38 miles west-southwest of Kontum City. Gunships and U.S. Air Force tactical air strikes were called in and killed 17 of the enemy and destroyed 16 bunkers. There were no friendly casualties.
