In Thua Thien Province on the night of Feb. 15, a 19-truck U.S. convoy was ambushed by an estimated six enemy eight miles northwest of Hue. The enemy used small arms and 57mm recoilless rifle fire. Enemy casualties are unknown. Friendly casualties were one killed, four wounded and one truck heavily damaged. The same evening in the same Province, a U.S. Army CH47 helicopter crashed from unknown causes and was destroyed. Five U.S. personnel were killed in the crash.
On the night of Feb. 19, a U.S. Army UH1 helicopter was hit by enemy B40 rocket fire and was destroyed while on the ground four miles southwest of Khe Sanh. There were no casualties, but the aircraft was a combat loss. On the evening of Feb. 18, a U.S. Army UH1 helicopter was hit be enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in Thua Thien Province three miles south of A Shau. Four U.S. crewmen were killed in the crash. During the afternoon of Feb. 20, a U.S. Army helicopter was hit by enemy ground fire, crashed and was destroyed in Quang Tri Province 22 miles southeast of Khe Sanh. There were no casualties in the crash. That evening, another UH1 helicopter crashed due to operational causes and was destroyed in Phuoc Long Province 20 miles northeast of Phuoc Binh. Three U.S. personnel were killed and three were injured in the crash.
