In Military Region 2 on Feb. 23, a U.S. Army engineer convoy traveling west on Highway 19 five miles west of An Khe was ambushed by an undetermined-size enemy force employing small arms and an unknown-type mortar fire. The convoy returned fire with organic weapons and U.S. helicopter gunships supported the action. There were two enemy killed, one detained, and two crew-served weapons captured. One U.S. soldier was killed and two wounded and the convoy suffered light materiel damage.
