C/16 CAV 13 CAB was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Kien Giang Province, IV Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Rach Soi
Description: 22Mar71- Vietnam communiqué Feb. 28- Mar. 6 Darkhorses net 34 in Delta action The action in a narrow strip of flatland between the coast and the western edge of the U Minh Forest drew some attention from the allied push at the Laotian border, focusing it on the forgotten war in the Delta. In Kien Giang Province, just above the An Xuyen-Kien Giang Province border, 25 miles southwest of Rach Soi, the Darkhorses of the 16th Air Cavalry, 13th Combat Aviation Bn., and allied ground troops killed 45 enemy soldiers in several encounters throughout the afternoon of March 4. Working in support of the ground troops, the Darkhorse light observation helicopters saw the bulk of the activity claiming 32 of the 45 enemy killed. Two more were credited to the Cobra gunships, and the remainder were killed by ground troops. The first contact came shortly after noon when the LOHs spotted two VC while making a visual reconnaissance. Making low runs over the area, they were credited with seven enemy killed. Another run in the same area killed an additional two Viet Cong. The other enemy soldiers were killed later in the afternoon in the same general area, when the Darkhorses spotted enemy personnel moving toward bunker positions. Gun crews moved in on the area to accomplish the last contact of the day.
