1/5 CAV 1 CAV was a US Army unit
Primary service involved, US Army
Binh Tuy Province, III Corps, South Vietnam
Location, Binh Tuy
Description: 15Mar71 A day in the life: grunts live them one at a time BINH TUY - Never has an Army been recorded so completely on film as has the Army here in Vietnam. But no matter how many times the life-and-death struggle of the man in the field is captured, it never loses its poignancy. Such was the case when the men of the men of the 1st Signal Brigade's Motion Picture Team 4 traveled with the men of Co. A, 1st Bn., 5th Inf., of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). The infantrymen of Co. A were involved in a search and clear mission in Binh Tuy Province. The cavalrymen were followed through the prepatrol planning sessions through the heat and exhaustion of the thick forest of the northern sector of Binh Tuy. The camaraderie and dedication of the men of Co. A were displayed throughout the entire operation, and the men even expressed their appreciation for having the photographers along. Occasionally, a unit will look upon a photographer as an extra burden, but not so with the men of Co. A . The troopers looked upon the photographer's presence as an extra incentive. As one specialist remarked: The photographers' being here takes some of the edge off the patrol for us. It's easy after a few months in the boonies for a man to feel forgotten. But just knowing these guys are taking pictures of us helps our morale, makes us feel that someone cares about what we're doing out here." Photo Caption: 1) Both point man and his dog lead the mission as the platoon follows. 2) Officers and squad leaders of Co. A map out plans for the mission. 3) Trooper holds a smoke grenade toward an opening in the jungle ceiling. 4) After sweating through the thick jungles of Binh Tuy Province, this cavalryman stops for a much-deserved rest. 5) Following completion of their mission, members of Co. A unload needed materials and load those cache supplies they've uncovered aboard a chopper.
