He was born December 23, 1939 in Morrill, Nebraska, however, he spent most of his life in the Military defending his country, receiving the Good Conduct Medal, Cobant Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart, Meritorious Unit Citation, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Parachutist Badge, Armed Forced Expeditionary Medal (Dominican Republic), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal w/1 Silver Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/PALM, 4 Overseas Service Bars, Army Aviator Badge, however, his honor will not be the only thing left behind. One of the first Mexican Restaurants in Columbus, Ricardo's, was owned by Thomas and his family. He also received a degree in journalism and English from Columbus State University. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 6 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus. A private interment will be in Fort Mitchell National Cemetery. Attending will be his wife, Myrna Farmer Gutierrez; seven children, Brenda Julius (Gary) of Columbus, Tammy Serda of Achworth, GA., Andy Pino (Gina) of Buford, GA., Thomas Gutierrez and Phillip Gutierrez of Columbus, Brad Vernetti of Costa Rica, Kevin Gutierrez (Christina) of West Palm Beach, FL.; two brothers, Richard Gutierrez of Superior, AZ., Pete Gutierrez of Mesa, AZ.; three sisters, Mary Cordova of Phoenix, AZ., Yolanda Vetter of Shallow, AZ. and Connie Gutierrez of Taos, NM.; ten grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
