More detail on this person: HALE, Major Dick, US Army (Retired) age 83 of West Milton, OH, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012. Dick was born July 24, 1929 in Dayton, OH, son of the late James W. and Eda H. (Whiteman) Hale. He began his decades of military service in 1948. The many facets of service Dick honorably executed, including spending 2 years serving 2 separate "Tours of Duty" in the Republic of Vietnam from 1966-1967 and 1970-1971, flying helicopter gunships. He was "shot down" on 3 separate occasions, escaping serious injuries and capture by the enemy. Dick was the Commanding Officer of an Aerial Rocket Unit, flying the Cobra Helicopters. Also, tucked within the framework of his military service, Dick served as a police officer with the City of Dayton Police Department. Then in 1963, as the need for experienced pilots became critical, Dick was once again called into active military service, where he remained until his retirement in 1979. During these times of service and raising a family of 2 daughters, he found the time to earn a Bachelors Degree from the University of Omaha. Following his retirement from the US Army, having attained the rank of Major, Dick enjoyed several years in the air as the Airborne Traffic Reporter for WONE/WTUE radio.
