More detail on this person: James Douglas Howell James Douglas Howell James Douglas Howell, 54, of Paris died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003 in Lima, Peru. He was joined in death the following day by his mother Mildred. A joint service in celebration of their lives will be held 10 a.m. Monday Aug. 25, in the chapel of Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Miller and the Rev. Ray Starnes officiating. Interment will follow in Meadowbrook Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. He was born Nov. 8, 1948, in Paris, to James Dennis and Mildred Ritchey Howell. He was a graduate of Paris High School and Paris Junior College. After college he joined the U.S. Army, serving our country from 1970 to 1973. He was a Chief Warrant Officer while in the Army, and served in Vietnam with over 600 night missions in an OV1 Mohawk. Following his military service he returned to Paris and from 1974 to 1983 owned and operated Howell's Flying Service. He married Barbara Annette Patterson Sullivan on Nov. 6, 1981, in Clarksville. They later moved to Florida, where he became a commercial airline pilot. He began his aviation career at the age of 16 under the instruction of I.N. "Junior" Burchinal. He was a commercial airline pilot with helicopter and fixed-wing instruction ratings. He loved to fly as well as to teach anyone who wanted to learn to fly. He was instrumental in instructing many local pilots, including his brother, Don and his son, Dennis, who recently became a pilot. He had been a captain on DC-8s and a co-pilot on 747 Jumbo Jets. His flying had taken him around the world. When not working, he spent his time in Paris. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time at his cabin playing with his grandkids or just talking with his many friends. He is survieved by his wife, Barbara; his son, Dennis Howell and wife, Lisa, of Clarksville; a daughter, Mitzi Edwards of Paris; a brother, Don Howell and wife, Donna, of Reno; step-children, Robert Sullivan and wife, Doil, and Shelly Boutwell and husband, Bobby; and grandchildren, Melyssa, Cord, Tori, Jordan and Nolan. Casket bearers will be Russel Ham, Eric Clifford, John Bell, Gary Poteet, Jack Ritchey and Jock Ritchey.
