More detail on this person: Peter A. Matson, 60 Peter A. Matson, 60 Groton Landmark (MA) - Friday, October 6, 2006 TOWNSEND -- Peter A. Matson, 60, died unexpectedly on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, at Health Alliance-Leominster Hospital, after being stricken ill at his home earlier that evening. Matson is survived by his wife of 38 years, Linda J. (Oja) Matson; a son, Peter J. Matson of Townsend; a daughter and son-in-law, Caroline R. and Marty Drummond of Ashby; a sister, Susan T. Tait of Leominster; five brothers, Timothy L. Matson of Fitchburg, Jonathan W. Matson of California, Stephen T. Matson of Townsend, David A. Matson of Lexington and Enoch W. Matson of Marlboro. He also leaves two granddaughters, Megan J. Drummond and Heather E. Drummond. Matson was born in Fitchburg, Jan. 26, 1946, a son of the late Torsti O. and Harriet E. (Todd) Matson and was a lifelong resident of Townsend. He was a 1964 graduate of North Middlesex Regional High School in Townsend and later continued his education at Fitchburg State College. He worked as a Massachusetts State Policeman for 34 years, retiring in 2002. During that time he worked as a trooper and later for 16 years as a Detective Inspector in the Middlesex County State Police Fire Marshall's Office. During that time he was stationed in State Police barracks located in Athol, Northampton, Concord, Boston, Lowell and Leominster. During the Vietnam War, Matson served his country for two years as a helicopter pilot in the United States Army. He was a life member of the Townsend VFW and a member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Townsend, the Lodge of Masons as well as the Aleppo Temple Shriners. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, at the First Baptist Church, Main Street, West Townsend. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery, West Townsend. Arrangements are being handled by the family by the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, (Route 119) Townsend. Memorial contributions may be made to the Valiton Center for Homeless Veterans, Fairmount Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420.
