More detail on this person: George H Morrill, 61 Morrill, 61, retired U.S. Army colonel San Antonio Express-News (TX) - Wednesday, March 4, 1992 George H. Morrill, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, served his country during a 20-year military career, helped the homeless of San Antonio and taught ROTC. "He had touched so many lives," said his second wife, Wanda Morrill of San Antonio. "The ripples from him go worldwide. He made friends both young and old." Morrill died Sunday of cancer. He was 61. Born on May 27, 1930, in Minneapolis, he grew up in St. Louis Park and Anoka, both in Minnesota, where he graduated from high school in 1949. After high school, Morrill attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a bachelor's degree in elementary education. During his college years, he participated in the ROTC program. When he graduated from the university, he was granted a commission in the U.S. Army. He went into the transportation corps of the service. Morrill married Morlee Armstrong of Anoka in 1951. She died in 1956. He served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War, in 1966-67 and 1971-72. Morrill was an Army pilot who flew small airplanes and helicopters, said his sister, Marlys Morrill Chutich of Anoka. Morrill retired from the Army in September 1973 because his wife was suffering from multiple sclerosis. He became an ROTC instructor at Robert Cole High School at Fort Sam Houston. Chutich said Morrill loved teaching and was active with an explorer scout troop. He took the troop camping in New Mexico, canoeing in Texas rivers and rock climbing. He retired from Cole in 1988. Morrill married Wanda Darby Sams on April 14, 1987. They volunteered their time to the San Antonio Metropolitan Ministry shelter. He was a member of Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church. His wife said he battled cancer for three years. He was diagnosed in 1989. "He handled it wonderfully well," she said. "He was a very strong person. He was very concerned about other people. He always had a positive outlook." Morrill loved canoeing, motorcycle riding and sailing. Other survivors include his wife; one son, Steven George Morrill of San Antonio; two daughters, Martha Lee Morrill of Charlotte, N.C., and Ann Morrill Greaver of St. Louis; one brother, Byron Hauck Morrill of Escondido, Calif.; and three grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment is scheduled at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with arrangements by Sunset Funeral Home.
