Joseph Eugene O'Connell, 66, of Champaign, formerly of Minonk, died at 1:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 1997, at his residence. Born Jan. 15, 1931, in Minonk to Thomas and Emma Louis O'Connell, he married Joan Polman on June 3, 1954, in Notre Dame, Ind. She died Jan. 5, 1994. He also was preceded in death by one brother. Surviving are two daughters, Kathleen Francisco of Champaign and Mary Ann Marchand of Tampa, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Jack of Pekin, Tom of Morton and Louis of Verona. An Air Force veteran, he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1975. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Urbana, where memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday. There will be no visitation. Mittendorf-Calvert Funeral home in Champaign is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church Education Fund or the Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.
