More detail on this person: Lt. Col. Carl H. Sawls Jr. Retired Lt. Col. Carl H. Sawls Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Nov. 29, 2005. He was 84. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Bridlewood Chapel with the Revs. Hugh Owen and Johnny LaCarter officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens. Col. Sawls was born on the 13th of December, 1920, in Alabama. Col. Sawls was a combat aviator who flew in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Col. Sawls distinguished himself by winning the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Distinguished Flying Cross, as well as many other awards, for gallantry in combat. Col. Sawls flew for a combined total of 45 years in military aviation. Colonel Sawls was preceded in death by his father, Carl H. Sawls Sr.; mother, Lola W. Sawls; and sister, Carlene S. White. Colonel Sawls is survived by wife, Mary Ellen Hagy Sawls; sons, Thomas Yale Sawls and Charles Jarrett Sawls; sisters, Betty Right, Joann Hopkins, Sutie Sawls, Lola Smart and Patsy McEacheran; and granddaughter, Christen Sawls
