More detail on this person: THOMAS E. TURNER NORTHAMPTON -- Thomas E. "Tom" Turner, 60, of Pleasant Street, Northampton, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at home. Born May 12, 1944, in Norwich, Conn., he was the son of the late Horace and Grace (Fogarty) Turner. He was raised in Wareham, educated in schools there and was a graduate of Wareham High School. He was a graduate of the Bridgeton Academy in Maine; Fitchburg State College, where he received his bachelor's degree; and Springfield College, where he received his master's degree. He was a decorated U.S. Marine Corps veteran and received his commission on Feb. 10, 1969. He served with the Marine Corps in Vietnam for three years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was a helicopter pilot with the USMC Combat Group. He received the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palms; five Air Medals; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Meritorious Unit Gallantry Cross; and numerous other citations. The Vietnam Cross of Gallantry was awarded for his unselfish service in the line of duty, while under fire, saving several other soldiers' lives. After his tour of duty, he later re-enlisted and went on to fly Phantom fighter jets for air support for his fellow Marines in Vietnam. Survivors include a son, Christopher Turner of Waterville, N.C.; two daughters, Sarah Turner and Jenni Turner, both of New Bern, N.C.; a grandchild; a sister, Sally Coyle of Sagamore Beach; and several nieces and nephews. Rites of Committal will be observed at - p.m. Friday at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. Military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Marine Corps at the time of interment. Arrangements are by the Czelusniak Funeral Home of Northampton.
