Van Dyken, patriot, pilot, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away at his home in Chula Vista surrounded by his family on January 20, 2008. He was 84. Born in Morristown, NJ, he married his high school sweetheart, Esther Gibbs, in 1943. Harold had a distinguished military career which spanned 33 years, first serving our country as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and later in the Army Air Corps and U.S. Army as a Pilot in Korea and Vietnam. He retired from the military and settled in San Diego County in 1975. Initially the family lived in Scripps Ranch and later in Valley Center, Coronado and Chula Vista. In addition to his wife, Esther, Harold is survived by his sons, Bart (Salt Lake City, UT), Bill (Aurora, CO), Robert (Lemon Grove); his daughters, Susan Elahi (Napa, CA), Vanessa (Coronado), Lisa (Valley Center) and Barbara (San Diego); 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Christine Wolfson, (FL). He is preceded in death by his son, Peter Van Dyken (Valley Center); his parents, Cornelius and Henrietta Wilhemenia Van Dyken (NJ); sister, Jenny Laufenberg (NJ); and brother, Nicholas Van Dyken (FL). A Memorial Mass and Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, January 31, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, located at 655 C Avenue, Coronado, CA 92118. Interment will take place at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, tribute donations to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Adopt-a-Student Fund made in Harold's name would be appreciated. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com
