More detail on this person: Garry Lee Whitaker, 70 Garry Lee Whitaker Petoskey News-Review (MI) - Monday, July 24, 2006 Garry Lee Whitaker, 70, of East Jordan and Deltona, Fla., died Friday, July 21, 2006, at his home in Deltona. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc., in East Jordan. Brother Larry Damer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in East Jordan will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery, East Jordan. Garry was born on Jan. 9, 1936, in Ann Arbor, the son of Glessner and Winifred (Richards) Whitaker. On Aug. 20, 1955, in East Jordan, he married his sweetheart, Patricia Carney. She preceded him in death on Sept. 18, 1981. Garry served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper during the Korean conflict and served two terms in Vietnam as a helicopter gunship fighter pilot. He later served as a helicopter instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, Ala. He retired as a chief warrant officer after 20 years in 1976. He then moved back to East Jordan to live by his parents. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge F&AM in Ozark, Ala. Garry loved his family, flying, bass fishing, karate, farming and ranching. Garry is survived by four children, Debra (Gary) Calkins of Alpena, Rolland (Andrea) Whitaker of East Jordan, Patricia (Tom) Knoch of Deltona, Fla., and Angela (Ron) Goodenough of Deltona, Fla.; and 14 grandchildren, Chad Calkins, Michael Calkins, Meagan Knoch, Jeffrey Calkins, Beau Knoch, Kara Whitaker, Alexander Whitaker, Brittnie Whitaker, Sharity Whitaker, Ryerson Whitaker, Christine Whitaker, Brent Swartz, Aaron Swartz and Joshua Swartz. He was also preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather, Rolland Quirk, who raised him, and an infant granddaughter, Karen Ann Calkins. The family will receive friends 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, at the Penzien Funeral Homes Inc., in East Jordan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to ALS Association, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 150, Calabasas Hills, Calif. 91301-5104.
