More detail on this person: Sigmund "Siggy"
John Wutkiewicz, age 69, died on Jan. 11, 2013,
due to complications from cancer. He will be
remembered for his commitment to service, his
singular sense of humor, his adventurous spirit
and his love for his family. Siggy was born in
1943 in Jamaica, N.Y., to Sigmund and Mary
Wutkiewicz. Sadly, Siggy never knew his father, a
private in the U.S. Marine Corps who was killed in
the battle of Iwo Jima. His mother eventually
remarried, and the family spent the remainder of
his childhood in Manorville, N.Y. Siggy received a
Bachelor's of Science degree at Bethany College,
where he studied chemistry and biology and met
his first wife, Judith. In 1966 he enlisted in the
U.S. Marine Corps. He trained at the Marine Corps
Air Station in New River, N.C., and at the Naval
Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., before he went to
Vietnam in 1967 as a second lieutenant. He flew
medical helicopters in Vietnam, among other
duties, achieving the rank of captain before
leaving active service in 1970. He was awarded the
National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam
Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the
Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Air Medal (23
strike/flight awards). Following his military
career, Siggy lived in Gillette, N.J., with his
growing family. He became a special agent for the
U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration from 1971
until his retirement in 1995, working on several
high-profile cases in New York City and Newark,
N.J., before continuing his career in Burlington.
Living in Essex Junction since 1986, Siggy loved
Vermont and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed
hunting and fishing. Guests in his home were
treated to a large collection of taxidermy animals
as well as many colorful stories about their
origins. After retirement, Siggy often traveled
around the country with his second wife, Kathleen,
whom he met through his involvement with the Boy
Scouts. He was a friendly, social man who loved
meeting new people and prioritized connecting with
his fellow servicemen. Siggy's son, Scott
Wutkiewicz, predeceased him in 1995. He leaves
behind his wife, Kathleen Wutkiewicz; his brother,
Andy Waski; his son and daughter-in-law, Rusty
and Yolanda Wutkiewicz; his daughter, Kimberly
Wutkiewicz; stepchildren, Matt and Heather
Rosencrance, Donny and RaeCarol Thomas and
Tom Bumby; his former wife, Judith Marsh; as well
as seven grandchildren, Matt, Angela, Donny,
Kimmy, Cole, Joey and Anna Clare; and four
great-grandchildren, Cheyann, Chloe, Charlotte and
Kathryn. Arrangements are in the care of Stephen
C. Gregory and Sons Cremation Services of
Shelburne. A memorial service will be held at the
Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph
Center in the spring. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to Intrepid Fallen Heroes
Fund.
