More detail on this person: Capt. (Ret.) Roger D. Zehr Capt. (Ret.) Roger D. Zehr, age 82 of Copperas Cove passed away Monday, January 2, 2012 in a Temple hospital. Roger was born February 3, 1929 in Alva Oklahoma to Samuel Alpha Zehr and Mary Ann (Sackett) Zehr. On January 1, 1950 he married the love of his life Alice Zehr in Fort Monmouth, NJ, she preceded him in death on March 22, 2008. He served in the United States Army until his retirement in 1968. While serving he was a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He received a Purple Heart during Vietnam and was a lifetime member of the Purple Heart Association. He also received the Flying Medal with thirty Oak Leaf Clusters. He was a member of VFW Post 8577 in Copperas Cove and American Legion Post 0345 as well as the 114th White Knight Association. Roger was also a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Copperas Cove and the United Methodist Men. He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Jo Ann Wright and a son in law, John Wright. He is survived by two sons, Michael Zehr and his wife Denise of Copperas Cove and David Zehr and his wife Beverley of Panama City, Florida; a daughter, Linda Hodges of Copperas Cove, Texas; two brothers, Dale Zehr of Ponca City, Oklahoma and J.D. Zehr of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; twelve grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. The Zehr family will receive guests for a time of visitation from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, January 8, 2012 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at Grace United Methodist Church in Copperas Cove with Pastor Stephen Schmidt, officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors in the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. For those that desire the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 101 West Ave. F, Copperas Cove, Texas 76522.
